Call for Papers

Workshop “Ontology and Semantic Web for Big Data”

located at ICSEC2013 conference
September 5, 2013, Bangkok, Thailand

The “Ontology and Semantic Web for Big Data” (ONSD2013) Workshop will be organized as a part of the ICSEC2013 conference held in Bangkok, Thailand, during Wednesday 4th September - Friday 6th April 2013. The workshop is hosted by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), Thailand.

  • Paper Submission Deadline is extended to June 30, 2013.
  • Keynote Speaker: Dr.Kouji Kozaki, Associate Professor, Osaka University will give a talk on the topic "Ontological Engineering for Big Data".
    • Abstract.

For efficient and innovative use of big data, it is important to integrate multiple data bases across domains. For example, various public data bases are developed in life science, and how to find a novel scientific result using them is an essential technique. In social and business areas, open data strategies in many countries promote diversity of public data, how to combine big data and open data is a big challenge. That is, diversity of dataset is a problem to be solved for big data. Ontology gives a systematized knowledge to integrate multiple datasets across domains with semantics of them. Linked Data also provides techniques to interlink datasets based on semantic web technologies. We consider that combinations of ontology and Linked Data based on ontological engineering can contribute to solution of diversity problem in big data. In this talk, I discuss how ontological engineering could be applied to big data with some trial examples. I also give a brief introductions on the current state of Linked Open Data (LOD) activities.

    • Short Bio. Kouji KOZAKI is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Knowledge Systems, the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University. He received his Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees of Engineering in 1997, 1999 and 2002 from Osaka University, respectively. His research interest includes ontology building, fundamental theory of ontological engineering (especially for role and identity), ontology development system, ontology-based application. A major theme of his research is a development Hozo (, which is an environment for building/using ontologies, and ontology building in several domains such as clinical medicine, bioinformatics, environmental engineering.

In the information overload era, it is necessary to manage information and to identify meaningful and well-structured knowledge. Analyzing big data is one of the most important research areas. Ontology and semantic web technology are among the key success factors to form explicit knowledge by defining concepts and relations between concepts. Ontology-based applications can enhance processing of data in terms of interoperability, reusability and sharing. The mission of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the semantic technologies and related technologies to present their innovative research results or novel applications of semantic technologies related to big data.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Ontology and Reasoning
    • Ontology modeling, reuse, extraction, and evolution
    • Ontology mapping, merging, and alignment
    • Ontology evaluation
    • Searching and ranking ontologies
